History of Kawai-JPN Traditional Instruments
In Taisho 10th (1921), Our company was founded in Goken-Cho in Tokyo, Kanda-Myoujin by Sōkichi Kawai as a goodwill partner for Yamagata-ya Koto maker.
The era was called the "Taisho Roman" era in Japan, when people enjoyed the victories of the Shino-Japanese and Rosso-Japanese wars and the influx of Western civilization. At the time, the major hope chests were a chest of drawers made of paulownia wood or a Koto.
Our building's ground floor was used as the shop and the workshop of Koto, first floor were training rooms for Kanda's Koto and Shamisen masters.
Despite being hit by two devastating disasters: Great Kanto Earthquake and the Bombing of Tokyo in World WarⅡ, we refuged with our precious musical instrument production tools.
We lost our original building because of the bombing, and Sōkichi moved to Setagaya to continue the business.
Our second-generation president Mitsuo Kawai moved the shop to Minami-Chō in Tokyo, Suginami.
After the war, Japanese traditional music, which had been stagnant due to the wartime ban on extravagance, became popular again with Michio Miyagi, Kinichi Nakanoshima, and others. Also, traditional music style itself became more diverse such as large-scale ensembles by a large number of people and collaborations with Western orchestras.
Among them, Mitsuo's Koto string tightening technique always had a good reputation, and he became a presence that supports the world of Japanese music.
The strings on the koto are changed according to the type of music. In addition to choosing the thread tightening with silk string or Teflon string, Mitsuo could also change the string tightening method to change the tone sound to play old songs, modern songs, and combination songs with Western instruments.
Therefore, Mitsuo was constantly receiving string tightening jobs from musicians who were on the level of Living National Treasures, and even Hougaku Journal (Journal of Japanese Traditional Music) wrote an article about Mitsuo's technique.
Also, apprentices gathered from all over the country to learn his technique.
The article about Motsuo's technique (from 2022 February "Hougaku Journal")
He had relationships with great Japanese musicians in the era such as...etc.
, and supported their performances by behind the scene. (名前読み方教えて下さい)

On the koto, you can hear the tone that can only be produced by Japanese paulownia wood, and feel the craftsmanship of the wood grain and tongue decoration.
